About Us
Who We Are
Koimene Impact Foundation (KIF) is a nonprofit organization based in Monrovia, Liberia, dedicated to providing help and hope to individuals facing addiction. Through comprehensive substance abuse rehabilitation programs, educational initiatives, and community reintegration support, we aim to restore dignity, purpose, and stability to those affected by addiction.
Founded in 2018 by Leemue Koimene and Karina Dean-Koimene, KIF was born out of compassion and a firsthand encounter with the harsh realities of addiction in Liberia.
Our Story
The vision for Koimene Impact Foundation began in December 2017, when founder Leemue Koimene visited Liberia and experienced an event that would change his life. During his stay, his phone was stolen by a Zogo—a term used locally to describe individuals struggling with drug addiction. With the help of a local Zogo leader, Leemue was able to recover the phone, but the process took him through Liberia’s most marginalized areas: ghettos, slums, graveyards, and abandoned communities.
What he witnessed was heartbreaking — a young mother smoking heroin while breastfeeding her newborn, and young men and women lying unconscious from drug overdoses. These moments opened his eyes to the deep human suffering caused by addiction and the lack of systems to support recovery.
From that experience, Leemue began building relationships with members of the Zogo community and learning their stories — stories shaped by poverty, displacement, and trauma. The Liberian Civil War had left behind a legacy of broken families, lost education, and limited opportunity. Many young people who had been forced to join armed groups as children were left without direction or hope. For many, drugs became a means of escape.
Moved by what he saw, Leemue — with the support of his wife, Karina Dean-Koimene — founded the Koimene Impact Foundation to provide rehabilitation, education, and community reintegration for those trapped in the cycle of addiction.
